Pen & Sword have published about 40 guides to aspects of family history, each concentrating on a particular walk of life, or on a geographical area (and a QR code on the back cover allows access to details of them). This volume on the Army, now in its third edition, is likely to attract a large number of readers, given that the majority of people in Britain must have had ancestors who served in it; the author points out that in the First World War alone, 22 per cent of the male population did so. He assures them that the Army, bureaucratic in nature, left behind more records than did most other occupations; but not all these records survive, nor are they necessarily easy to find. He begins with a list of the major relevant archives and libraries (providing contact details) and also supplies a list of the most important printed books on how to research Army records.
