Modern India contains a wide range of peoples, speaking a wide range of languages, and following a wide range of religious customs. These are the result of a long series of invasions from the north (the odd episode of the British Empire was an exception in that it spread from southern sea-ports rather than through the Khyber Pass). Broadly speaking, the northern portion is populated by people speaking Indo-European Sanskritic languages, divided into castes, with a substantial number of Brahmins at the top and a substantial number of people below the caste level at the bottom. The southern portion is populated by people speaking non Indo-European languages, with a very small Brahmin population - evidence suggests that Brahmins arrived in the south quite late in history, and that some concepts of caste may have come with them: the Tamil word for caste - Jati is Sanskritic and does not occur in the earliest literature.
