At about the same time that this Dictionary was released, the well-known "Doomsday clock" of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (oddly not mentioned in its pages) was moved forward to two minutes to midnight, indicating that in their opinion, the chance of such a worldwide catastrophe is greater than it has been since the 1950s. This is therefore an appropriate time for the author, who has spent his working life studying these matters, to bring out a new and expanded edition of a work first issued 10 years ago (RR 2008/064). It takes the usual format of the now extensive Rowman and littlefield series, comprising 550 articles of between 20 and 2,000 words. The author stresses that he has aimed to cover not only the weapons of mass destruction themselves (though he avoids using that term, as it is not defined with sufficient precision) but also the efforts that have been made to control them. In fact, the individual types of weapons account for the largest category of entries: other topics are persons, countries, places, factories and techniques associated with them and organizations and agreements concerned with their control.
