At a lecture I attended recently, someone asked the question "Would the Reformation have happened without Luther?" The content of this substantial two-volume work, the Encyclopedia of Martin Luther and the Reformation, suggests that its authors would not think so. Luther and his influence are the focal points for this work, which is very clear about its "Luther-an" focus. It is an encyclopedia not only of Luther but of Lutheranism, setting out to trace back the relationship of twenty-first century Lutheran churches and organizations to Reformation origins and principles.
