This is a splendid book, now in its second edition. The coverage is as wide as is claimed on the cover. The first section is on the integrated body. This covers evolution, genetics, cells, tissues and the various body systems. This section acts as an introduction to the two main sections. The anatomy section begins with more details of the 11 body systems. Then parts of the body, like the head and the lower leg, are dealt with body system by body system. So for the head and neck, we get several pages on anatomy, followed by similarly detailed information for muscles, nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular, lymph, digestive and endocrine systems. The second major section is how the body works. Taking the digestive system, we get detailed accounts of the mouth and throat, stomach, small intestines, liver, large intestine and a general account of nutrition and metabolism. The life cycle is then covered. This includes sections on inheritance, the developing embryo and foetus, the newborn child, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age and the end of life. The last section is on disorders and disease. Inherited disease and cancer get general coverage. After these diseases of each body system or specific part of a system are discussed. Respiratory disorders include brief accounts of colds and influenza, bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, tuberculosis and more. Obviously, this section is not comprehensive, but having explained how the body works, this section outlines how it can go wrong. The book ends with a glossary and an index.
