The substantial three-volume The Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of Design is a welcome addition to the existing stock of reference works on the ever-popular subject of design. In the Introduction, the Editor states that "the aim of the publication is to offer a 'one-stop' place to locate definitions, descriptions, critiques and analyses of aspects of design" (p. 27), which it achieves because of its 1,000-page content. It does not claim to be comprehensive but encompasses the interdisciplinary nature of design, leading to "connections made to aesthetics, visual culture, material culture, applied sciences, social sciences and humanities" (p. 28). Its audience is both academics and the general public.
