This revised edition devoted to Brussels in the established series of historical dictionaries of cities, states and regions from the stable of Scarecrow Press is some 20 per cent larger than the original edition published in 2004. The series aims to provide a critical overview of a broad range of subjects including world history, art, business, cities, cultures, literature and philosophy. All volumes - and the volume under review is no exception - aim to offer highly informative introductory essays written by recognised experts in the chosen field. In addition, each volume provides extensive chronologies of the subject, as well as lengthy bibliographies including references to recently published sources. In common with the first edition, this new edition has been prepared for publication by Paul F State, who has lived and worked extensively in Brussels and published a range of books and articles on international politics and history of the Netherlands and Paris, as well as on Brussels itself. The volume also includes a number of useful appendices such as a small number of maps showing the layout of Brussels in 1845 and the occupiers of property in the Brussels Grand Place. Other appendices include lists of the Burgomasters of the city, the estimated number of inhabitants from 1400 onwards and a list of the city's guilds.
