The Bayeux Tapestry is an amazing survival and is a key document for many aspects of the history of its period. It seems likely that it has lost some panels at the beginning and the end. It has been likened to a PowerPoint presentation with each incident presented as a separate slide. I have not seen the original, but there is a very good replica copy in Reading Museum which I have looked at on a number of occasions. Although this bibliography came out last year, it is of particular relevance in England as we commemorate the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings in 2016. The Royal Mint has issued a commemorative 50 pence coin showing someone pulling an arrow out of his eye. This is unlikely to have been a fatal wound and it is unlikely to have been King Harold. The man being hacked to death a little further along is probably the king. There are two appendices in this book: one lists the Dramatis Personae, with a brief account of their involvement, in order of appearance as in a film and the other lists the medieval sources. The second ends with a description of the indexing system of the Cotton Library collection of manuscripts, an aspect of library history about which I was previously unaware. There are 1,787 references in this bibliography. The author title and citation are given. There may be a note about translation, format and similar technical details. There is then an account of what that particular item has about the Tapestry. Where the reference makes only passing reference, for example 1,164 which I read a few weeks ago, there is no annotation. These works are general art or historical reviews. Sources that have a full annotation can be divided into those that deal with battle and its history, those that deal with tapestry as a work of art or as a document and those that deal with aspects of technology or social history for which the tapestry is evidence. This division is mine and not the compilers'; the articles are in author order.
