摘要

The editor of this encyclopaedia suggests that the contents should be of use to actors, students of acting and theatre and to theatre-goers in general. He has provided a wide range of information about acting on stage, including biographical, historical, geographical and technical points of view. The entries are arranged in simple A-Z dictionary format, with any further reading on the subject at the foot of each entry. Entries have been selected according to clear criteria and focus almost entirely on stage rather than screen achievements. A few directors have been included, especially where their theoretical writings are indispensable to the complete comprehension of acting as an art. Theatre companies are also included, especially those who consider part of their brief to be the nurturing of actors as members of a community. A good example of such a company is the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) based in Stratford-on-Avon in the UK. Also included are organizations, which train actors such as the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London.
