Mark Twain is quoted as having said, "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics". We're bombarded in the news with statistics about everything: health, crime rates, education, economics and more. What does it all mean? STATS.org (STATS) tries to help sort it out. A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, sister to Center for Media and Public Affairs, and an affiliate of George Mason University, STATS delves into the numbers in the news. Using the concepts explained under one tab such as "confounding factors" and "causation versus correlation", the researchers evaluate how statistics are used, and point out problematic assumptions, conclusions and oversimplifications.
