As this book points out, it is not true that Islam was born "in the clear light of history". Muhammad seems to have been born in 570CE and died in 632CE. The Qur'an took its present form around 650CE, and the first written record of his life dates to about 760CE. Nevertheless, a great deal is known about the period. South Western Europe, Asia Minor and North Africa formed the Roman (Byzantine) Empire. Present-day Iran and Iraq formed the Sasanian Empire, largely Zoroastrian in religion. These two monotheistic empires had fought each other to a standstill over the centuries, leaving a power vacuum. Muhammad consolidated his rule over the Arabian peninsula, largely ignored by both parties, but his successors started the process of invading, and ultimately overthrowing, both of them. This consolidated territory still forms the core of Islam, with later accretions by conquest or conversion of parts of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and on into the East Indies. This process can be clearly mapped - an atlas showing the diffusion of Christianity would be a much more complex affair.
