This is a workmanlike reference book with an eye to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. By the time it reaches the mid-twentieth century it begins to run out of steam. The revolution was over. Let us start therefore by establishing few facts about the periods under review. The industrial revolution, first phase, consisted of iron, steel, textile and railway development, all powered by steam; it was complete by the mid-nineteenth century. The second phase comprising electricity, automotive and chemical advances, plastics and processed food occupied the late nineteenth/early twentieth centuries. Our own age centres around computers, electronics and bio-technology and is ongoing. Professor Hendrickson's volumes cover phases one and two but have much less to say about the third. Thus, an early entry is Thomas Savery, the Devonshire man who, in 1698, produced one of the first steam engines; it was liable to blow up when in use but he started the ball rolling. A later figure was Leo Baekeland, the Belgian-American chemist who, in 1907, produced "Bakelite", the thermoset plastic much used in electrical switchgear.
