It is a seemingly universal human urge to name things: from earliest times that has applied to celestial objects as well as terrestrial. Stars and planets have been named from ancient times, and as the discovery of new planets outside the solar system has advanced, so have the objects been named. Or at least, they have been named until recently. The sheer number of new minor planets being discovered has far outstripped the pace of naming them. In 1990, 80 percent of the 4,357 numbered minor planets had been given names; today, of more than 300,000 numbered minor planets a mere 5 percent have been named. That is not an issue for astronomers as the number of each object assigned by the International Astronomical Union always remains the primary identifier. The
