Good medical treatment used to be a combination of tender loving care and drug therapy. It is to be regretted that tender loving care is in rather short supply nowadays. Even the psychotherapists' favourite treatment of the moment - Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, is a fairly brusque workout by comparison with older and more soothing forms of counselling. On the other hand pharmaceutical treatments have developed enormously in the last half-century or so. We now have effective drug treatments that would have been unimaginable in my childhood.
