According to the old advertising slogan, "If you want to get ahead, get a hat". Author Beverly Chico has spent the past 30 years doing just that - amassing over 600 hundred items of headgear from 100 countries around the world, to form a collection spanning five centuries of crowning style and practicality. From the historical to the cultural, the balaclava to the burqa, this entertaining compendium has a hat for all occasions - and not only hats, but also examples of caps, crowns, wigs and veils. In compiling "a global overview of hats and headwear", Beverly Chico has put together an informative source on the wide-ranging uses and symbolism of the chapeau, including religious, ceremonial and purely aesthetic designs. Various cultural aspects of wearing hats are touched upon, from tradition (tossing hats into the air) and idiom ("at the drop of a hat"), to the headgear of different countries, such as the Asian turban or Persian chador. In the Western world, everyday headwear dropped out of fashion in the 1960s, and hats are often considered old-fashioned, like the gibus (collapsible top hat), or even comical, like the ten-gallon Stetson or sombrero. Anything worn on the head in modern times is usually practical (helmets), cultural (the yarmulke) or barely a hat at all (fascinators). But for promoters and preservers of cranial fashion, magazines like Hat Life in the USA and The Hat Magazine in the UK represent the hat trade worldwide.
