The first edition of this book appeared in 2004 under the title The Horror Readers' Advisory: The Librarian's Guide to Vampires, Killer Tomatoes, and Haunted Houses and was co-authored by Tammy Clausen, Spratford's colleague at Berwyn (Illinois) Public Library. Both books belong to the ALA Reader's Advisory series. The current edition's more streamlined title corresponds to the narrower focus Spratford brings to bear on the matter of readers' advisory for horror. While the previous version of this book succeeded in presenting a wide range of works under the horror label, the current guide deals specifically with horror as a rich and unique genre in its own right.
