The American novel has grown with the history of the country and the stories of the many ethnic groups who coexist there, coming "to define the culture of the US in all of its glories and imperfections", in the words of editor Alfred Bendixen. From Washington Irving's A History of New York, written in 1809, through The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne (1850) and Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe (1852) to The Call of the Wild (London 1903) and To Kill a Mockingbird (Lee 1960), the American novel is a creative cornucopia of genres, topics and traditions. Famous authors including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dashiell Hammett, Steinbeck, Kerouac, Capote and Stephen King have all contributed to the diversity of American fiction, writing from different eras and backgrounds, but merging their unique literary talents to form one national voice. Denning this still relatively new and historically varied form of literature is the greatest challenge faced by Bendixen and the other scholars of the companion.
