Urban legends have been around for many years, a large body of modern folkloric tales passing around different social networks firstly by word of mouth, and more recently via the internet. The subject of the tale is usually one or two degrees removed from the teller - a friend of a friend, or a colleague of a relative. The stories tend to reflect social and cultural traditions as well as our own fears and emotions. The truly classic urban legends, e.g. the college student returning late to her dorm and waking to a "aren't you glad you didn't turn on the light" message on the wall, or the alligators which allegedly live in the sewers of New York City, have become embedded in popular culture to the extent that references to them are immediately understood.
