When reviewing the Encyclopedia of Pollution (Gates and Blauvelt, 2011) I suggested that the human race has not yet come to terms with Magellan's proof. Magellan's crew finally demonstrated that the world is finite we cannot throw anything "away" because there is no "away" to throw it to (RR 2012/230). Politically the world consists of independent nation-states but we all share the same biosphere. Over the years a body of international law has developed, producing a range of reference literature such as The Cambridge Companion to International Law (Crawford and Koskenniemi, 2012) for example (RR 2013/048).
