What is geobiology? It is the emerging field of the interaction of living organisms with geology. Its roots go back to 1903 but it began to take shape in the 1980s with concepts like Gaia. Over time more specific topics have been investigated and the new specialism of geobiology has emerged and is now at the stage where a volume in the Springer Encyclopedia of Earth Sciences is justified. There are about 200 full entries, with a few very short entries that lead you to full entries, in this encyclopaedia. The short entries are obvious in the list of contents as they have no author. The letter R section ends with four of them: Reefs, which directs to Carbonate Environments; Remineralisation of Organic Matter, which leads to two entries on Carbon; Rhodophyta, which briefly defines the group and directs you to the Algae entry; and RNA World, which sends you to Origins of life.
