This book is unique in this reviewer's experience of reference books: it is highly informative, written in an easy-to-understand style, clearly presented and extremely funny!! "Intellectual property" is a portmanteau term for a range of property rights which include copyright, trade and service marks, patents and design right (both registered and unregistered). It is not a very attractive term and some years ago the UK government set up a fairly high-powered committee to find an alternative. Despite several meetings (at considerable taxpayer's expense) the outcome was that the term "intellectual property" or IP was the best. The author of this dictionary acknowledges that it is an anachronism and asks if a dictionary of an anachronism is justified. He comes to the conclusion that it is simply because IP is an all-pervasive concept which is largely misunderstood by the general public and even lawyers who do not work in this highly specialised field. In a world where the creativity of individuals and organisations is increasingly important for economic as well as educational and recreational purposes it is important to understand the jargon of this particular sphere of legal activity. Like all specialist areas it has its own vocabulary which sometimes bears little resemblance to that used in general parlance.
