摘要

The publication of encyclopedic volumes offering students of classical languages a handy guide to the myriad of references and allusions in those literatures goes back at least to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries with works such as the dictionaries of John Lempriere (1788) and Sir William Smith (1844). The present volume under the editorship of Margaret Howatson of St Anne's College, Oxford is the third edition of the work first prepared by Sir Paul Harvey in 1937. In keeping with the rest of the Oxford companions series Harvey's intention was that his work would provide a useful source of information for the general reader. Since its first publication interest of the general reader in classical literature has changed considerably. In 1937 the general reader was likely to have some knowledge of Latin and, possibly, Greek, whereas today's readers are probably almost entirely unacquainted with these languages. Yet today's readers are far more knowledgeable in other ways: they are widely travelled and more sophisticated. As well as providing some account of the literatures of Greece and Rome Margaret Howatson's aim is now to set these against the concerns and constraints of their societies and institutions.
