The revised fifth edition of The Oxford Dictionary of Saints coincided with the beatification of Cardinal Newman by Pope Benedict XVI, in September 2010. In his detailed and instructive introduction, David Farmer explains the history and process of canonization, of which recognition by the pope is the third step. Like Mary MacKillop, or Saint Mary of the Cross, the Australian nun canonized in 2010, Cardinal Newman will no doubt receive an entry in a future edition of the dictionary! Ever popular, this longstanding reference work, first published in 1978 and updated with 300 new entries since the last edition in 2004 (RR 2005/ 288), contains additional entries on recently canonized saints from around the world and an additional appendix.
