The decision by universities in the UK in the 1960s to withdraw Latin as a compulsory entrance qualification for certain undergraduate courses was viewed by many in this country as the likely death-knell of classics teaching. Whilst some universities, as a consequence, decided to withdraw the teaching of classics at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, others took the decision to develop a wider range of courses to meet a more general interest in the Greek and Roman civilisations. Proof of the continuing interest in the subject in the UK among the general public is shown by the popularity of courses in classical civilization offered by the Open University for degree programmes as well as by the growing number of popular television archaeology programmes on the subject.
