John Grasso's Historical Dictionary of Basketball is the second in a series of historical dictionaries published by The Scarecrow Press. Grasso has contributed to various works on the history of basketball, mainly dealing with basketball and the Olympic Games. This focus provides a different perspective on this particular book. Most Americans think of basketball as an American sport and tend to forget that Dr Naismith's game has gained popularity worldwide. The only time most Americans see basketball played by anyone other than the NBA, college or high school teams is during the Olympics. As a result this dictionary is much more than just a dictionary of the game as it is played in the US. While the majority of the entries deal with the game played in the US there are many entries for players and teams from other parts of the world.
