Tracing our past is a fascinating and often seductive endeavour. Because of this the general public is deeply interested in archaeology. Archaeological topics bleed outside the careful empiricism of science and show up transformed as sensationalism in the popular culture. Stories of lost extraterrestrial civilisations and Utopian societies masquerade as bone fide archaeology on television, in magazines, and on the internet because there is an ever-ready audience for them. As the author of this book asserts, science is not about sensationalism but rather, "... achieving ever more accurate and precise explanations about the world around us..." (p. x). To help set the record straight and, more importantly, demonstrate how one archaeologist systematically approaches pseudoarchaeology, Kenneth Feder has written a single-volume compendium of archaeological and historical mysteries, myths, misunderstandings, and frauds.
