AustLit is a stupendous database, comprehensive, authoritative and inclusive. Back in 1988 the Australian Defence Force Academy Library at the University of New South Wales started an indexing service for Australian literature. Eventually it morphed into the web-based AUSTLIT: Australian Literary Database in 1999, so AustLit, albeit in different forms, has a long history.rnThe National Library of Australia and twelve universities now collaborate on the current AustLit, which has been available since 2001 . Several specialist literature databases were subsumed into the single AustLit resource. Some of these can be searched as subsets. The database is an "internet-accessible information service and a mechanism to support and facilitate research into [Australian] literary and print culture" (AustLit, 2007, p. 45) from 1780 until present.
