Now that geographic coverage is nearly complete, Scarecrow's reinvigorated Historical Dictionaries of Europe series has begun to focus on the recent history of some of the continent's larger nations. This volume on the contemporary UK follows those on Modern Italy (Gilbert and Nilsson, 2007) (RR 2008/194) published as number 47 in the series and Contemporary Germany (Lewis and Zitzlsperger, 2007) (RR 2008/145) published as number 54. Purchasers of the series, and this, like Scarecrow's other range of historical dictionaries, must have a loyal band of libraries to sustain continued publication, will recall earlier coverage of the UK published as the seventeenth contribution to Historical Dictionaries of Europe just over ten years ago. Also by Panton and Cowlard, this was issued in two volumes, the first covering England and the United Kingdom and the second Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (Panton and Cowlard, 1997-1998). Panton, a UK native but currently a professor of geography at the University of Southern Mississippi, is also responsible for Historical Dictionary of London (Panton, 2001) in Scarecrow's Historical Dictionaries of Cities of the World series.
