摘要

Germany's downfall in 1945 was complete: a total war ending in total collapse. The defeat was comprehensive - military, psychological, political and to a large degree economic. Its culmination in the Russian storming of Berlin was symbolic of the failure of the Reich as a whole. Under partition, the country became a cockpit for superpower relations and a microcosm of the Cold War. It was the perfect replica: a brutal territorial rupture, deep mistrust on both sides, flourishing espionage, foreign occupation and military forces maintained at saturation levels. Russia kept a permanent force of half a million men in the GDR. But in the midst of all this, the German people had to rebuild their lives as best they could: babies were being born, children went to school and, slowly, public transport started up again. The rubble was cleared. Newspapers were printed, and there was some theatre and cinema.
