Not many states in America rate their own Companion. But California is different: it is a land of superlatives. No other state is so populous or so rich; not many are so big; none of the others have such distinct regions, from the wooded North and the high sierras, to the desert and scrub of the South; very few have such a kaleidoscope of ethnic groups. California is also politically varied: what do an Orange County conservative and a Bay Area liberal have in common apart from their driving licence? This variety is because California has been a draw for all sorts of migrant groups ever since the 1920s. If they were not attracted by the defence plants or the movie industry, they came for the land - a rich soil which grows just about anything. The combination of wealth, sunshine and glamour has made it a magnet for 36 million people.
