This guide is based on the Bertel Bruun and Arthur Singer book published in 1970 by Hamlyn (I still have my copy and it cost £1.25!). A popular book, it was reprinted throughout the 1970s and revised in 1978. It was translated into ten languages. A new revised edition was produced in 1986 by the same editors of this new Philip's edition. In 2001 it was the subject of considerable changes so that the illustrations of the species were separated out and the texts placed under the paintings together with the maps.
