Scarecrow's rejuvenated Historical Dictionaries of Europe series, which managed only nine titles between 2000 and 2005, has now produced diirteen volumes in two years. This revival is to a large extent a result of the publication of second editions. Ten of the 13 titles to appear, including die volume here under review, fall into this category. The original Historical Dictionary of Modern Italy published just nine years ago as the 34th volume of the series. Running to 40 or so pages short of die present number it was also the work Gilbert and Nilsson. It should be noted though, that Nilsson, who was the primary author for the first edition, died shortly after its publication.
