Prior to receiving this Collins dictionary to review, I had already reviewed Chambers Concise Dictionary (RR 2005/32) and the Concise Oxford English Dictionary (RR 2005/143), both of which were comparable with the Collins in size, price, intent and content. So what, I wondered, was special about this one? Superficially, all three are similar. All are based on sophisticated data-gathering technology; in this case the Collins Word Web, a 2.5 billion-word "corpus of lexical data" which grows at 35 million words a month, and which provides an automatic alert to new words. The lack of having to rely on human judgement was deemed to be an advantage. As we all know, though, the quality of the output depends in large measure on the quality of the input. Quite what source featured bourree, boustrophedon, boutonniere, bouzouki and bovine somatotrophin - all words featuring in this (English!) dictionary - is not specified. I doubt not that they have been used in some source or other, and if so, then someone else may also encounter them and welcome a dictionary entry, but I do wonder if this "hovering" approach to the world's logorrhoea is altogether sensible. On the other hand, I welcome bourn, Bourse, boutique, bovine, bower, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, and even Bovril! In support of the Collins Word Web, though, the final appendix giving a sampling of brand new words is evidence of its success: thus chugger (a blend of charity and mugger referring to those charity workers who stop people in the street and petition for direct debit), botox, chav (a lout with a predilection for baseball caps and hooded sportswear - I noticed two books on chav-speak in my local bookshop), kerb appeal (of a house), phishins (an e-mail scam), and pash rash (an inflammation of the skin caused by kissing an unshaven man). "Sharp and true to life" is the Collins slogan.
