What may be useful in future is to label products with not only energy efficiency ratings, but also embodied energy ratings.rnSome developed countries are reducing their CO_2 emissions but are these reductions as much as we think? Recently I read that "5.3 Gigatonnes - or nearly 20% of global emissions - result from international trade, with developed countries being net importers and developing nations net exporters of emissions." Goods with iron, steel and aluminium content are the main source of embodied export product emissions, but significant contributions can also come from the trade of products such as cement, clothing and food.rnThe country that immediately springs to mind as a high emissions exporter is China, with its almost exponential growth in overseas sales of white goods, electrical products, clothing and virtually everything else - not to mention its rapid introduction of coal fired power stations.
