The UK House of Commons has passed the Planning Bill, which proposes that an Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC) will take over decision making on major infrastructure projects - including offshore wind farms over 100MW and power cables under 132kv. Planning applications could be fast-tracked through in under a year.rnAccording to the UK Government, "the Bill introduces a new system for approving major infrastructure of national importance such as harbours and waste facilities, and replaces current regimes under several pieces of legislation. The objective is to streamline these decisions and avoid long public inquiries."rnRebel Labour Members of Parliament (MPs), the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats wanted amendments made to the Bill to ensure ministers retain political control over decisions made by the IPC. The amendments were rejected, however, by 303 to 260 votes in the House of Commons on 25 June, and the Bill has been passed on to the House of Lords.
