Economic geography has undergone a distinct evolutionary turn in recent years. While work on path dependence, institutions and 'lock-in' dates back to the early 1990s, the last few years have witnessed the construction of a more explicitly defined evolutionary economic geography (EEG) project which seeks to apply the core principles of evolutionary economics and complexity science in a more systematic fashion. The editors of The Handbook of Evolutionary Economic Geography, Ron Boschma and Ron Martin, have been key players in this endeavour, editing a special issue of the Journal of Economic Geography in 2007 in addition to this collection. Both publications share the same origins in an exploratory workshop held in Cambridge, England, in 2006, funded by the European Science Foundation.
