Energy Fluxes Over Inhomogeneous Surface at a Sub-grid Scale of a Global Climatic Model

The analysis of long-term flux measurements indicates that the surface types in the Kursk region can be divided into two groups with Bowen ratio values of 0.1 and 1.0. Maps of heat balance components were constructed based on point measurements in accordance with techniques previously developed. Spatial variability of energy fluxes taken from the maps depends on the scale of their averaging. The net radiation has the least spatial change and sensible heat flux is the most variable. Standard deviation of the fluxes decreased 2-2.5 times when the averaging of the scale increased from 10 to 40 km. It is concluded that an area at least 100 x 100 km is needed for calculating representative fluxes for inhomogeneous terrain.
