Lindner has released a system aimed at detecting and stopping battery-driven facility fires before they get out of control. The company's Fire Prevention System monitors surface temperature at multiple points on conveyor belts, looking to detect particles that are of a higher temperature and pose a fire risk. It is especially geared toward preventing fires caused by lithium-ion batteries, which frequently enter recycling facilities by way of improperly disposed of consumer electronics. When these devices are handled in the sorting process, the residual power in their batteries can spark fires. The Lindner system "detects overheated particles in the material stream, cools them to a safe temperature and makes sure that objects that cannot be cooled can be safely removed by hand," according to a release. Cooling is achieved through a water sprinkling system that automatically engages when particles of elevated temperature are detected. In situations where an object cannot be adequately cooled, such as a battery that has already hit the "thermal runaway" stage and is close to sparking a fire, the system makes a last-ditch effort to prevent further damage. "This triggers an alarm, stopping the conveyor belt under an active cooling nozzle so the hazard can be manually removed," Lindner stated. "Depending on the application, the threshold value can be chosen freely."
