The cyclical nature of the business can help those with a long view, but what if the cycle doesn't circle back? As the understanding of the "evolving ton" has deepened over the last five or six years, it's become clear the mix of materials found in curbside rollcarts isn't going to return to what it was 15 years ago. The industry needs to address that fact. We humans are a stubborn bunch - we don't like to change course once we're on one. And we don't like to react to subtle changes to our environment, business or otherwise. Whether it's the backfire effect (when one reacts to disconfirming evidence by strengthening one's beliefs) or confirmation bias (the tendency to focus on and remember information in a way that confirms one's preconceptions), we don't like to change our minds.
