摘要

Two decades ago, government officials in the Portland, Oregon area conducted a study to determine whether picking up yard debris more frequently results in less of the material getting landfiled. What they found: It does. The study was conducted by Metro, the regional government for the Portland area that is responsible for solid waste planning and managing the waste transfer and disposal system. The results were reported in the January 1995 issue of Resource Recycling. In 1989, Metro staff found yard debris accounted for nearly one-quarter of all residential waste in the area. During the late '80s, few single-family households had the option of leaving their yard debris at the curb for pick-up and recycling. Then, curbside yard debris programs started to grow over the next five years. Some picked up yard debris weekly, and others picked it up once every two weeks or quarterly.
