During the past two decades, the processing of recyc-lables has changed dramatically, from dual-stream to single-stream collection of recyclable materials and now to the collection of mixed waste in a single cart in some communities. But along with these changes have come safety challenges created by the machine/human interface. When it comes to optical sorters and other technology that can help bring recycling efforts to new levels, it's critical to consider how machinery should be safeguarded and the best ways to integrate the equipment into a facility. For guidance, operators and managers can turn to a number of ANSI guidelines and OSHA regulations. Integrating these mechanisms during the early design phase is much more efficient and cost-effective than attempting to add them after the facility has been completed.
