摘要

Although the U.S. rate of recycling has increased in the last 47 years, it has not kept the U.S. footprint from increasing in this period, albeit slowly in the last five years. The footprint measures the land needed to supply one person with resources and to absorb their carbon wastes. The recycling rate in the U.S. grew from 1960 to 1980, increasing from 6.4 percent to 9.6 percent. In the next 20 years, the recycling rate more than tripled, reaching 29 percent in 2000.
