I am writing to urge municipalities and states to get involved in ASTM International's revision and adoption of the Society of Plastics Industry's (SPI) plastic resin identification code currently used in the U.S. to identify plastic containers by resin type. ASTM's review of the existing codes provides a crucial opportunity to change, and improve, the plastics coding system that has been problematic for recycling programs throughout the U.S. for more than two decades.
