Economic prognosticators have turned dour in recent months. This is not good news for the domestic recycling industry. They say we will see very slow economic growth this year, maybe at about two percent. Unemployment levels, already at a two-year low, will continue to rise. At the same time, the credit squeeze caused by the sub-prime mess will result in reduced consumer spending. This already is leading to a decline in durable-goods orders, which is a poor sign for the recycling industry, as these items, such as appliances, contain significant amounts of recycled materials. Helping compound these economic woes, housing starts have fallen to a 16-year low.
