Committing to a sustainable IT program can extend equipment lifecycles and increase utilization rates, while lowering an organization's overall costs. A green initiative centered on an organization's IT assets does not happen overnight. When companies make a commitment to sustainable IT, though, they eventually see that going green is cheaper, and often wonder why they did not implement a program earlier. People like new and shiny things, but lengthening lifecycles, and, when appropriate, refurbishing and reusing older equipment, is both financially and environmentally beneficial. For every $ 1,000 in original equipment costs, extending a three-year lifecycle to four years will save an organization over $325; stretch that lifecycle to 4.5 years, and the savings is nearly $500. Extend a three-year lifecycle to five years, and the savings mounts to over $650. The lifecycle costs used to calculate these savings takes into consideration deployment costs, residual value and disposition cost on retirement.
