Each year, approximately 300,000 buildings are demolished in the United States, generating an estimated 65 million tons of demolition waste annually. Only 20 to 30 percent of this waste is reused or recycled by a demolition industry focused on removing structures as quickly and inexpensively as possible, with little regard for salvaging recoverable materials. Thus, valuable wood framing, flooring, doors and a wide variety of other materials end up in the waste stream.
