摘要

Recycled fiber has been and will con-tinue to be a major raw material for the paper and board industry. The main drivers for the use of recycled fiber are availability at an economic price; legislative and voluntary agreements based on environmental pressure; and continuously improving deink-ing and other recovered fiber-processing technology. Despite this increasing role as a raw material for the paper industry, issues such as price volatility of recovered paper, quality factors, food contact proposals and ever increasing environmental pressures and considerations, may cause a rethinking in some sectors. The aforementioned concerns may result in some companies choosing to go with virgin fiber, where quality and environmental considerations are greatly reduced and price stability is better. The paper industry and its supply chain can, to a certain extent, influence quality and price issues. Environmental considerations and food-contact proposals, however, will require effective lobbying to ensure the overall industry is not disad-vantaged.
