Although landfills across the U.S. are being filled at a growing rate, Big Chipper Inc., located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is not "down in the dumps". Instead, the company has taken an active approach in recycling wood waste, effectively keeping it out of landfills. "Homeowners and tree companies can bring us the brush, limbs and trees that used to get burned or taken to the landfill," President Paul J. Farmwald says. "Capturing wood before it gets destroyed and making something useful out of it just makes sense." The company, started in 1988 as a seasonal mulch retailer, has grown to become Grand Rapid's largest wood recycler. Farmwald explains how the business grew: "I recognized that the mulch business is so seasonal that we had to develop other businesses to feed us during the off months. We had to innovate or die".
