In recent months, successive forecasts have revised downward estimates of UK economic growth in 1998-99. In August there was a rise in the retail sales figure which was regarded as surprising but this came mainly form strong sales of food. That sector showed an increase of 1.2 per cent on the previous month, but in June And July special factors, including poor weather and a heavy programme of sport On TV, are though to have affected sales. The usual monthly increase in the Volume of food sales is only 0.2 per cent and it is likely that the strong rise in August will be followed by lower rises in subsequent months.
