The authors developed a visual access device that made it possible to observe the behaviour of the CCDs which are discharged form the piston top ring groove during the engine firing operation: The authors observed the half-sticking status of the Piston top ring and recognized the occurrence of (1) An intermittent reduction phenomenon in which the Closed gap of the top ring fluctuates, and (2) a failure To maintain the oil film on the outer circumference of The ring. These observations enabled the outer circumference of Arrive at a reliable identification of the half-sticking Phenomenon.
